2026 Elephant Butte Dam First Day Walk

Completed in 1916, this engineering marvel is typically closed to all pedestrian and vehicle traffic for security. However, for one day only—New Year’s Day—the gates open for visitors to experience the breathtaking views of the Rio Grande and Elephant Butte Lake from the top of the dam.

Despite a grey start to the morning with early showers, the clouds made way for a beautiful midday walk across the dam.

With the rain stopped and the temperatures warmed up enought to make the stroll across the crest, it was comfortable and enjoyable.

History buffs, a photography enthusiasts, the general public enjoyed this walk, offering a perspective of the T or C area you can't get any other time of year.
